Hitler, where would we be without him?
From Hans-Jurgen Syberberg's controversial seven-hour-long Hitler: A Film from Germany (1977) to films that are not about Hitler but use his name to make a point - like Ronnie Cramer's cult comedy classic about a peeping tom called Even Hitler Had a Girlfriend and the zanily entitled Hitler, Elvis, and Duct Tape on a Cat - the fascination with the person and even the mere name persists. Because of what the name represents, the 22 Hitlers listed in the New York telephone book before 1939 had all changed their names to something else by 1945.

Denver Watercolor painter and local teacher among exhibitors in downtown show
The August exhibit at Hart's Main Street Gallery features waterco0lors in limited edition prints by Ronnie Cramer of Denver, Colo,, and oils by Alliance artist Kendall Perrin.
Cramer's selections consist of a few portraits, but mostly urban and suburban commercial street scenes. Cramer talks about 'the desire to find beauty in...everyday, otherwise 'unattractive' objects.'
His watercolors of street srchitecture accomplish that by not being absolute renderings, as with the photo realists. They achieve a hint of mystery by, for example, blurring the information on a theatre marquee or leaving out the name on a street sign or the stars on an American flag.
And as in the works of Edward Hopper, Cramer's streets are either empty or contain only one or two persons.
Cramer has also done two series of six works each that recall the individual pages of motion picture 'flip books.' One series follows a woman donning a jacket and preparing to ride a motorcycle. The other shows a woman taking a newspaper out of a street rack. The latter, in black and white, has nice details using minimal means.
Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. - Thomas Harper

Le plus noirs des noirs
For me, this film has been unforgettable as simply the darkest and most sinister and most degenerately erotic - and yet most commonplace in its settings - that I have ever seen. I tend to have a particular appreciation for low-budget works, and this one requires little more than momentary use of a few parking lots, three apartments, an old car, one city sidewalk, and a stairway or two as settings.
As additional props are required a little sugar to simulate cocaine, a baseball bat, and a small quantity of alcohol (could be cognac or calvados) for the end-scene "garce flambee dans la bathtub". The film, as I recall, was shot in black-and-white.
Film Noir is definitely not a genre I am naturally attracted to, but this one is super-noir and will remain burned in my memory - a film I would rate quite highly, though I never want to see another like it.
